Things to See and Do in Unemploymentville: GET OUT of the HOUSE!!
Get Out of the House – Preferably Every Day
Get out of your house EVERY day when unemployed (or as close as you can come). This will have a domino effect of also making you more likely to SHOWER and CHANGE your clothes which will also make you feel better. You will see OTHER PEOPLE. You can even talk to them! People are social animals, so socialize!
If you are inclined to exercise with others, consider joining a gym or the YMCA (Y’s often have financial assistance possibilities if you are low on funds). An exercise class will give you a specific time and place to go to.
Not into that? Go to an internet café or go to the library and do your job searching there.
One job-seeker wrote that they lived in a very rural area and that the couple dollars in gas that it required for them to go to town was more than they could afford. If that fits you, a couple possibilities are:
– take a walk or ride a bike. In a rural area this might not make you meet too many people, but it’s better than the alternative of sitting inside
– figure out a way to make the trip pay for itself. This could be by hiring yourself as a dog walker or house sitter. It could mean selling excess belongings on Ebay or Amazon so that you regularly need to travel to the post office
In the show The New Girl when Jess loses her job, she goes a little crazy and her roommates struggle with how to help. Eventually she gets a new gig in her chosen profession of teaching. Everyone celebrates and Jess apologizes for everything, including being late with the rent. Nick replies, “we’re just glad you’ll have a reason to shower every day!”
(You may enjoy this clip of Jess saying she’s dealing with the job loss just fine)
So… don’t wait until you have a job to give yourself a reason to shower every day. GET OUT of that your house or apartment! or whereever you are staying.
Do it! NO EXCUSES.
